Exciting New Updates have arrived for the GOswim Program

GOswim Australia is excited to announce some advanced new updates coming to the GOswim Swimming and Water Safety Program in January, 2024!

To kickstart a new year of fun swimming experiences, we are pleased to announce that the GOswim Swimming and Water Safety Program curriculum has been refreshed and updated to further accelerate your learn to swim journey!

What does this mean for GOswim members?

GOswim teams across Australia will be implementing some fun, new lesson activities and new assessment criteria at each level of the program.

PLUS, we are also introducing four exciting NEW characters to represent the Starfish 2, Starfish 3, Seahorse 2 and Seahorse 3 levels.

As part of this update, all levels are now named sequentially from 1 to 14, with the number as the key level reference, followed by the type of aquatic animal representing the level.

Changes to the level names for relevant Infant and Preschool levels are as follows:

  • Starfish 2 will become: Level 2 - Octopus
  • Starfish 3 will become: Level 3 - Sea Turtle
  • Seahorse 2 will become: Level 5 - Penguin
  • Seahorse 3 will become: Level 6 - Sea Lion

More about the GOswim curriculum

The GOswim Swimming and Water Safety Program curriculum covers five areas of learning. These areas are combined and presented as activities to enhance the students' learning and development.

Key learning areas include:

  • Safe entries and exits
  • Balance, movement and recovery
  • Breath control, submersion and readiness
  • Water safety
  • Swimming stroke development

Since initial launch in 2019, the GOswim program has been built on a foundation of research and planning, ensuring the curriculum aligns with and transcends the strategies of peak organisations. These strategies include:

  • The Federal Government’s Curriculum Framework - where the learning focus is experiential rather than command teaching

  • The World Health Organisation (WHO) Drowning Prevention Implementation Guide - highlighting the importance of personal water safety and survival

  • United Nations – World Drowning Prevention Day

  • The Australian Water Safety Council’s Water Safety Plan 2020 – 2024

  • UNESCO – International Charter of Physical Education, Physical Activity and Sport

  • International Life Saving (ILS) – Drowning Prevention Policies

We are immensely excited about the positive impacts these updates will provide to your journey with GOswim, and we look forward to continuing our mission to teach the essential life skills of swimming and water safety across Australia throughout the new year, 2024!
