Waterways Safety with GOswim

Australia’s waterways are a wonderful place for families to explore… from rivers and lakes to beaches and pools. With so many opportunities for adventure, children must have the skills and confidence to stay safe around open water.

Our GOswim program is where waterways safety is a key focus. Through age-appropriate swimming lessons, children learn more than just how to swim. They build awareness of different water environments, practice safe entries and exits, and begin to understand how conditions like currents, depth, and visibility can change.

Our Waterways Adventure helps swimmers apply their skills beyond the pool. Children practice controlled movement in ways that prepare them for real-life water situations. Just as importantly, they learn to recognise hazards and make safer choices around water.

Consistency plays a big role in developing strong safety skills. While winter breaks are common, continuing swimming lessons help children maintain their abilities, build confidence, and keep progressing, even during the colder months. Every lesson reinforces muscle memory, awareness and decision-making that can make a real difference in and around water.

Parents and carers can support waterways safety by talking with their children about safe behaviours, supervising closely around all aquatic environments, and encouraging regular swimming practice. Tracking your child’s progress through the Active World membership app is another great way to stay connected with their learning journey.

With the right skills, guidance and ongoing practice, children can enjoy Australia’s waterways safely and confidently.
