Stay Afloat This Summer
Why Floating is the Skill That Could Save Your Life
As the weather warms up and we head into another season of beach days, pool parties, and water adventures, it’s the perfect time to talk about one of the most important, and often overlooked, water safety skills: floating.
Whether you’re in the ocean, a river, a lake, or a backyard pool, knowing how to float can make all the difference in an emergency. That’s why GOswim is proud to once again partner with Float to Survive and Bondi Rescue’s Head Lifeguard, Hoppo, to help swimmers of all ages build this life-saving skill.
Why Floating Matters
Floating isn’t just a basic swimming technique; it’s a survival strategy. In unexpected situations, like getting caught in a rip current or becoming tired in deep water, the ability to float can help you stay calm, conserve energy, and keep your airway above water until help arrives.
It also forms the foundation for other essential skills like treading water and signaling for help.
From the 1st to 14th of December, GOswim venues across Australia will spend the first five minutes of every class strengthening the Float to Survive 5 Step Float Strategy with its students.
Here’s how to float effectively in an emergency:
- Tilt your head back
Keep your face above water and your chin up. It’s okay if your ears are submerged.
- Relax and breathe slowly
Calm, steady breathing helps reduce panic and keeps your body buoyant.
- Extend your arms and legs
Spread out to distribute your weight and stay balanced.
- Use gentle movements
Slowly move your arms and legs to maintain your position without wasting energy.
- Signal for help
Once you’re stable, raise one arm and wave slowly to attract attention.
The best way to build confidence in the water is through regular practice. Whether you’re heading to the beach, the pool, or the river, make sure you and your family are ready. Floating could be the skill that saves your life.
Stay safe, stay confident, and keep swimming with GOswim.
